In Touch With God
I love poetry. Okay. Now you know. Poetry of all kinds.
As the church I serve reorganizes and downsizes its library, I picked up a book entitled ‘A Treasury of Christian Poetry.’ Trust you’ll enjoy and not just ‘endure’ the poems I post in the coming days.
Expecting him, my door was open wide:
Then I looked round
If any lack of service might be found,
And saw him at my side:
How entered, by what secret stair,
I know not, knowing only he was there.
T.E. Brown (1830-1897)
Have you ever wondered how God finds His way into your life? Where are you expecting God to show up? How widely open is the door of your life?
I am reminded of Revelation 3 where Christ is standing at the door of the church of Laodicea and knocking awaiting entry. Revelation 3:20 is not a text for personal evangelism but rather a challenge to a church that carries on its ministry while Christ remains on the outside!
May this not be true of the churches of which we are a part. “‘If anyone…’ yes ‘anyone’ hears My voice,” Jesus said, “and opens the door, I will come in…”
Lord in the midst of our current crisis we open wide the door for You to enter. The truth is, You are already with us and You have promised never to leave. In this we rejoice!
‘refresh’ – to give new strength or energy to; – to reinvigorate
In 2 Timothy 1:16-18, Paul, an early church leaders spoke of a colleague, a ministry partner named Onesiphorus. This is the only reference to this man but the four sentence paragraph gives us plenty of food for thought.
Paul is praying that the Lord will show mercy to this man’s household, that his entire family would be blessed because Onesiphorus had been such a blessing to others.
‘he often refreshed me…’ is Paul’s tribute to this believer who came searching and found this pioneer locked up in prison like a criminal. Perhaps he brought food, certainly greetings and the time together left Paul encouraged.
That’s the kind of person I long to be. I want to be refreshing to other people. This can only be done with God’s help. It is God’s grace and mercy flowing through us that will bring lasting help to others.
In this challenging season we are facing worldwide, may God raise up refreshments, people who make themselves available as channels through whom God can minister.
As the hymnwriter so well prayed, ‘How I praise Thee, blessed Saviour that Thy love laid hold of me. Thou hast saved and cleansed and filled me that I might Thy channel be.’ And then the chorus pleads – ‘Channels only, Blessed Master, but with all Thy wondrous power, flowing through us Thou canst use us every day and every hour!
